Beat the Heatwave with These 9 Desi Hacks

heatwave

Pakistan’s scorching summers are legendary, and with heatwaves becoming more frequent, staying cool and comfortable is essential. But fear not! Here are some desi hacks and DIY tips to help you survive the heatwave and keep your chill on:

Beat the Heatwave from the Inside Out:

  • Hydration is Key: Water is your best friend! Carry a reusable water bottle and sip frequently throughout the day. Opt for coconut water, buttermilk (lassi), or homemade lemonades for a refreshing electrolyte boost.
  • Lighten Up Your Diet: Ditch the heavy curries and opt for cooling foods like fruits (watermelon, cucumber), vegetables (salads!), and yogurt. Spicy food can actually increase your body temperature, so go easy on the chilies.
  • Cotton is King (and Queen): Wear loose, breathable cotton clothing in light colors. Avoid synthetic fabrics that trap heat and make you sweat more.

Cool Down Your Surroundings:

  • Embrace the Power of Curtains: Keep your windows covered during the hottest part of the day (usually 11 am to 4 pm) with thick curtains or blinds to block out the sun’s harsh rays.
  • DIY Air Cooler: Fill a large bowl with ice and water. Place a shallow pan on top and position a fan blowing across the pan. The cool mist will help circulate refreshing air.
  • The Wet Towel Trick: Take a cool shower or dampen a towel with cold water and drape it over your neck or forehead. Reactivate the coolness by dipping it in water periodically.
  • Nighttime Cool Down: Sleep under a cotton sheet and position a fan near an open window to draw in cooler night air.

Step Up Your Cooling Game:

  • Natural Cooling Sprays: Make your own cooling spray with a mixture of rose water, mint extract, and water. Spritz yourself throughout the day for a refreshing pick-me-up.
  • Indoor Plants: Plants not only add beauty to your home, but they also help cool the air by releasing moisture. Bonus points for fragrant jasmine or lavender plants!

  • Earthenware for the Win: Store your drinking water in an earthenware pot (matka). The porous clay allows for evaporative cooling, keeping your water naturally chilled.

Remember:

  • Limit Strenuous Activity: Avoid outdoor activities during peak sun hours. If you must go out, wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.
  • Look Out for Others: Check on elderly neighbors or relatives who might be more vulnerable to the heat.
  • Enjoy Local Delights: Indulge in traditional Pakistani summer treats like falooda or kulfi for a delicious and cooling way to beat the heat.

By following these simple desi hacks and DIY tips, you can stay cool, comfortable, and healthy even during the most scorching Pakistani heatwave. Remember, a little planning and some clever tricks can go a long way in helping you survive the summer and keep your spirits high!
